Wilson presents his plan... Wilson was welcomed in Europe after WWI as a hero. He was called the prince of peace. He had a plan to bring peace and end to future wars. The fourteen points. It was delivered to congress before the war was over, The first five points were designed to stop future wars: 1. No secrete Treaties 2. Freedom of the seas 3. Tariffs should be lowered for free trade. 4. Countries should not stockpile weapons. 5. Imperial countries should consider the rights of the countries they own. The next eight points dealt with boundary issues. The fourteenth point was to establish a league of nations. Allies reject the plan. Wilson wanted peace without punishment. The US had never been hurt by war, Europe had. European leaders want revenge. They wanted to make Germany pay. No one invited Central Powers or Russia to treaty. Wilson would have to compromise to get the 14th point, which he thought was key. The Treaty of Versailles was established in June 1919. It established new nations to take power away from Germany and Austria. It took land from the Ottoman Empire for Britain and France. Germany could not have an army, and they had to pay in land and money. Wilson did not have support of the US, some said it was too harsh, others said more imperialism was created. Some US people did not like the League of Nations, they wanted to be isolated. They thought they lost power. Wilson refuses to compromise. He ignores the republicans and isolates himself. He thinks he can convince America, he goes on a whistle stop tour of the US and suffers a stroke. Lodge presented a compromise. It was to accept the League, but with reservations. Wilson did not compromise, and he tells his own party to vote against it. US did not end the war until 1921, they never joined the League of Nations, they destroyed the future leagues and could not stand without them. The US wanted to be normal after the war. They grew during the war and progressed. The wounded did not want it to happen again. Europe was destroyed and hurting after the war. World War I led to World War II, that is its legacy.
